Baby Lila

Karen and Ben had been meaning to get some newborn shots done of sweet little Lila, but they were amazed, and a little scared, at how quickly the time flew by after their little love bug was born. Lila was only 5 lbs 11oz at birth and although she was growing so quickly, she was still small and sweet and newborn-ish! She is their first child so like all new parents, they are smitten and have realised she is the most precious thing in the world to them. Also, since they are living far away from their families, they were keen to have some lovely photos to send home and of course to capture this special time in their lives.

By the time Karen rang me, Lila was already eight weeks old. I have learned the hard way not to photograph newborns after 2 weeks of age as it is almost always a disaster. They do not sleep as much, as easily, or as soundly so one can't do all the crazy things like putting the sleeping baby in whacky positions or in unusual vessels the way you can in those first couple of weeks. And for some reason, in the first 3 or 4 months, when newborns are awake, they make an insane amount of facial expressions which, when all strung together in a real life moment, are utterly adorable, but any one of those faces frozen in time is not always so appealing, but rather gives the look of struggle. Humourous these faces may be, but certainly not framers and certainly do not capture the true essence of the wee one. But Karen somehow convinced me. Not sure how as I have turned away many a shoot when the timing was wrong, but I think she promised me that no matter how terrible the expressions were, she still wanted to capture the tininess of her little girl, while she was still tiny.

Karen paid attention to Lila's sleeping habits over the next few days and was sure to book the shoot when she was at her sleepiest. We were so lucky and the little angel slept for most of the shoot. I was melting to see her all snuggled up with her mummy and daddy.

And when she did wake up, she was still very snoozy so was sort of zoning out and therefore not too struggly at all - perfection!

Thank you both so much for such a gorgeous session. I was so totally surprised that Lila didn't do any of the expressions I normally see and so feel we are all very lucky! I am so glad we were able to capture her tininess and can't wait for the next installment to see how much she has grown! xxx
